To Choose a Cruise

Are you thinking about the holiday of a lifetime aboard a
ship? There are a number of questions to ask yourself and
perhaps some of the answers below will help you to plan
your perfect holiday.

When you're deciding where in the world you want to go,
perhaps the first question you need to ask is 'who in the
world do I want to go with?' Although cruising was always
for the more mature couples it's now popular with
honeymooners and even parents with young families. Some of
the ships have fantastic activities for children of all
ages and can keep them entertained all day, every day if
that is what you're looking for.

It is possible to spend huge amounts of money, so you need
to decide your budget at the outset and be strong enough to
stick to it. Cruising is notoriously expensive but there
are many, many shipping companies now desperate to fill
their cabins and this means that the deals are thick and
fast. It's not always the best economics to choose the
cheapest cabin. Remember that they'll be interior ones
right at the bottom of the ship and it can be quite
frightening if the seas get rough in the night. Although
you may think that you'll only be in your cabin for the
most basic amount of time, it can be heartening to know
that you can have some time alone in peace and quiet
sometime during the day and therefore you may think it's
worth 'splashing' out on a port hole so that you can be in
touch with the outside world.

Depending on when you want to go your destination could
well be altered. Trips to Alaska are very popular but it's
a bit too cold in the depths of winter. In fact, anywhere
in Scandanavia and the Baltic are really only feasible in
the six months from May. If you want to be further south,
the Mediterranean is embracing all year round, but
temperatures can really dip in the winter. If you want
guaranteed sunshine you need to head for the Caribbean or
Mexico.

To really get the most out of the trips on land and the
cruise as a whole, you really need to be quite fit. The
ship often has to anchor some way from the ports and they
then ferry the passengers on smaller craft. Just getting on
and off these can be a challenge if you're not very mobile.

You may choose a cruise which has a particular theme and
there are a lot of celebrities who will give talks and
demonstrations on a wide range of subjects. Some of these
cruises stay mostly on the sea and have few stops. Their
aim is to entertain you every moment that you're awake and
satisfy your every whim so that you don't want to go
ashore. It's rather like Disneyland on the water!

You also need to decide how formal you want to be in the
dining hall. Some ships still have a Captain's dinner,
whilst others recognise that more people prefer to be
informal. If you are required to dress it will mean packing
long dresses or dinner suits all of which are very bulky
and heavy. You will also be put on tables with others and
if this doesn't appeal to you, you'll need to book a
special table beforehand.
