Before frowning the next time you hear that you need to
take a business trip, consider the vacation it can lead
you on. Business travel is more and more common as the
business world becomes truly global. You may find yourself
taking frequent business trips. For those of you that do,
you may find that you can benefit from these trips if your
company allows you to use the mileage and hotel points from
your business travel for personal travel. Each company has
different rules on this so you will want to make sure you
know your company's rules. Your trips to clients and to
meetings may lead to vacations to Europe, sunny islands
or your favorite vacation destination.
Most airlines offer frequent flyer rewards. You earn points
or miles based on the distance of your trip. You then
can use these miles towards upgrades or free airline
tickets. There are a number of airlines that have joined
with other airlines to allow you to use your miles or
points in all the participating airlines, not just the one
you flew on. This could be a fast and easy way to do some
free travel.
This is mainly possbile only for those people who can book
their own business travel. If you have internal travel
department you may not have options, but you can speak to
them and see if they can accommodate your requests for a
specific airline. Your ability to stick to travelling on
one or two airlines may lead to quicker rewards. Also,
check to see if the airline participates with any other
airlines. Often the miles are interchangeable between some
specified airlines. You then can choose from any of the
participating airlines and earn quicker rewards.
You should also see if your airline mileage can be added to
by your hotel rewards. Many hotel chains now offer reward
programs that include upgraded rooms and free rooms based
on the points you accrue. Also, many of these programs
are now joined with airline programs so your points can
be used as mileage for the airlines as well. It's important
that you research this before making your hotel
reservations. You may be surprised at how quickly you can
begin to earn free travel and hotel stays.
To really benefit from your business travel you should
always be aware of possibilities to earn points and mileage
and keep abreast of how many of each you have and when you
can use them.
