Planning Travel with Toddlers

Taking toddlers on a trip can be fun as well as
challenging. Most kids enjoy traveling with their parents,
but at the same time, car trips can be scary or boring by
turns. Here are a few ideas to help make a car trip more
manageable for both parents and toddlers:

1. Travel while your kids are sleeping. This will allow
you some peace during part of the trip. You may have to
alter your travel times to match with the sleeping
patterns of your children. Of course, if night travel is
not a safe orcomfortable option for you, then look at
other options, instead.

2. Make sure that the toddlers have a number of things ~
toys and activities - to keep them busy during the
journey. Be sure to carry their favorite toys or the
activities they like doing most with you for the journey.
It will give your child a sense of security. Present your
trip as an adventure activity to your kids so they enjoy
it more. Travel games are also a good thing to carry on
journeys. Whatever your choice, the idea is to make
children feel comfortable and secure.

3. Make frequent stops. Kids can get tired of driving for
long periods of time, and they need to exercise or stretch
their legs. Make a point of pulling over every hour or two
at a service station or convenience store for the purpose
of restroom stops or a short sprint to get the legs
untangled. A drink of water or a pretty view might be
other reasons to stop for a few minutes. Make it enjoyable
rather than stressful for everyone.

4. Keep the car as clean during your trip as possible.
Carry travel hygiene items like a container with a lid
(for motion sickness or food poisoning),tissues and wet
wipes for sticky fingers and lips, and a trash bag for
disposing of uneaten food, empty cans, wrappings, and the
like.

5. Do fun things with the kids. Plan a few stops for them
to see something unusual. This might be wildlife, an
amazing view, or a popular site, such as a children~s
petting zoo. When the little ones realize there is
something fun ahead of them, the next leg of the trip may
not seem so long and tedious.

So, when you are taking a travel trip with children,
especially toddlers, plan driving time carefully,
bring items that will keep your kids comfortable and
entertained, and plan fun activities that the whole family
can enjoy so that your trip provides pleasure, not
torture!
