The Gift of Scuba Diving

Trying to find a unique holiday or birthday present? Ever
consider giving that special someone some pre-paid scuba
diving lessons? Clearly, this gift is for someone with an
adventurous personality who constantly seek out excitement
and new challenges. It is best to first understand whether
the person is a good swimmer and might be interested in
scuba diving before purchasing such a gift.
Be sure to find out what the gift will cost. A gift of
five lessons will obviously cover the cost of the lessons
themselves, but does it include additional things as well?
A certified professional is the only person that should be
giving lessons so be sure to check into their credentials
before making any purchase. It might also be a good idea
to find out what, if any, other clients the diver has so
you can check references. Does the price of the lessons
include the price of the diving gear rental? This may not
be an issue if your friend already has gear. It might also
be a good idea to see about liability insurance in the
event of an accident. And check to see if it is possible
to reschedule lessons should unforseen events like your
friend getting sick or having car troubles occur.
Hopefully the body of water where the lessons will be given
is clean, wholesome, and safe. You don't want your friend
to learn how to dive in water that is polluted, prowled by
predators, or riddled with riptides or other problems.
Determine in advance that your friend will be able to get
to the body of water as scheduled. For example, if he or
she lives an hour away and works until 5 p.m., can he or
she arrive promptly for a 6 p.m. lesson? What happens in
case of a traffic jam? Will the lesson begin late or will
your friend lose that part of the lesson?
You will want to ensure that there is no hard sales tack
behind the lessons. If you get a great price for six
lessons, does this entitle the trainer to push a certain
line of equipment on to your friend? Will there be a hard
sell for more lessons or even to buy a boat? It is
important to ascertain that the lessons come as a package
deal without further infringements or expectations of your
friend's commitment.
Unique and potentially life-changing, scuba diving lessons
can make for a great gift. Don't waste your money on
someone unlikely to use them. They should be given to a
person with a thirst for adventure and new challenges.
Make sure you check the gift out thoroughly, including
whether or not a refund is possible should your friend be
unwilling or even unable to make use of your generosity.
